A swimming pool in the Bassin Dusuzeau

The first vision for the conversion of the former harbour area of the “Port Autonome de Strasbourg” in “la Citadelle” is based on the industry which is captured by nature. In this scenario the two vacant industrial halls are used on the one hand for the functions of the rivers swimming pool, on the other hand the halls are revived by gastronomy. In contrast to the industrial charm of the former harbour side of “la Citadelle”, the opposite shore is characterized by a renatured area and a flat topography. Here, a newly designed river beach with greenery invites visitors & inhabitants to relax. The swimming pool serves as a connecting element in the “Bassin Dusuzeau”.

“La Citadelle” is surrounded by water and forms a peninsula. The canal "Ziegelwasser" flows directly into the “Bassin Dusuzeau” and serves as an attractive route to the renatured river beach. Additionally, a green corridor leads from the neighbouring residential area Neudorf to “La Citadelle”. A new pedestrian and bicycle bridge leads directly from the “Parc de la Citadelle” lying in the north into the harbour area, leading southwards to several important employers and the airport of Strasbourg.

A new residential district is profiting of the privileged location on the waterfront, connecting Neudorf to the “Bassin Dusuzeau”. Car-free principles characterise the district. This is made possible by two district garages and a city hub integrating different uses - such as Bicycle stations or local amenities. The parking spaces serve both residents and the swimming pool visitors. The typology and orientation of the new residential district results from the intention to generate an openness of the individual buildings towards the water. At the same time, it provides sufficient privacy for the residents. A clear edge of the buildings to the main street protects the inhabitants from noise and traffic. A wide promenade leads from Neudorf directly to the river beach, lined with various uses on the ground floor and a widening beach zone to the neighbourhood.

The basic urban concept is based on the free-flowing network of the public space, which is open to all users. Around the “Bassin Dusuzeau” a wide pedestrian promenade is placed, which is also clearly indicated for cyclists. The square at the tram station is complemented by a staircase leading to the waterfront. The existing crane forms a symbolic entrance to the rivers swimming pool. Furthermore, the former harbour area offers an open space sequence with different characters. Container shops, a harbour bar or a ticket counter for the Batorama tourist boats bring punctual attractions. The dam is part of the open space and bath concept. It creates a sunbathing area in the shaded green. This is strengthened by a spacious outdoor staircase that serves further as a spectator area for open-air events.
