Through dense and green

Mitigation of urban flashpoints

UrbanLab:Freiburg2.0

The large housing estates of the 1960s-1970s, the housing legacy of the post-war period: usually located in the periphery, as satellite towns on the outskirts of the city, with a skyline of monotonous and oversized mega-architectures, stigmatized as problematic urban flashpoints and declared a failure as housing typology.

The continuously growing global society of the 21st century faces similar problems today: massive housing pressure and increasing social disparities. The global climate crisis intensifies these pressures and the challenges expand to include the obligation to design and build in an ecologically, economically and socio-culturally sustainable manner.

We want to challenge the potential of large-scale housing developments and experiment future there! Translate sustainability strategies into livable future neighborhoods with the help of innovative, creative and visionary urban and landscape planning.

“Landwasser” in Freiburg should become even denser and even greener, even more multicultural and even more social! CO2-neutral, inclusive and safe!
