Mutations of urban riverscapes – Towards Ecocene

The Anthropocene Epoch must be as short as possible. It is our duty as professionals and responsible society to shift immediately to a new paradigm of cooperation between humans, non-human living forms, our cities and towns, and a planet suffering extreme climatic processes. As case-study, the site of Porteous in Geneva is selected: an abandoned industrial complex at the riverbank of the river Rhône. Squats “Prenons la ville” occupying it since 2018 forced the authorities to decline the initial idea to refurbish it into a jail, recently agreeing to convert the building into a social and cultural centre. Which alternative landscape figures encompass this metamorphosis and its associated decision-making processes? The goal of this researchLAB is to critically diagnose the inherent potentials of the site and identify future scenarios to develop it successfully, merging social, ecological and cultural endeavours.
